It is confusing to call HIV and AIDS TWO diseases. HIV is the VIRUS, human immunodeficiency virus... and AIDS is the disease that results from it. As another example, Malaria is not caused by a little malaria parasite, but rather by plasmodium falciparum... so as you can see, there's the name of the organism and the name of the resulting disease... that are not always the same. Although they sometimes are... dengue virus ("organism") can cause dengue fever (disease).
